Nebulab Playbook

public

Hello! We are Nebulab, a full-service eCommerce agency. We specialize in building bespoke eCommerce experiences for disruptive brands. We also lead the development of Solidus, and build a few products of our own, such as Sprout.

The whole (almost) team meeting in Spain for the 2024 retreat

This playbook documents how we work, how we run the company, and how we deliver for clients. We were born in 2011 and have been remote-first since day one: it started as a humble GitHub Wiki, one of our very first company-wide initiatives, and it has changed shape more than once since. Our vision for it has stayed the same: to document both the kind of company we are creating and the kind of change we are effecting.

It’s plain Markdown, so it can be read by humans on GitHub and by AI agents from a local checkout.

How it is organized

Folders follow subjects, not teams. There are three kinds of content, and the folder tells you which one you are reading:

  • The playbook is every folder except the two below. A page there describes how we work today. If it is out of date, fix it.
  • Clients (clients/) holds one entry per client: the profile is current, the project material next to it is dated.
  • Records (records/) holds dated material that is not current policy: decisions (our RFCs), celebration posts, past retreats and yearly plans. A record never changes after the fact; the playbook page it affected links to it.

Every page declares who may read it: public for anyone, client for the clients we work with, internal for teammates only. The website shows each visitor only what they are allowed to see.

Sections

  • Company: who we are, our mission, values, story, team, brand, and the charters of our teams.
  • How we work: our culture, the rituals that shape our work, growth and relationships, and how we make decisions.
  • People: policies for teammates, from onboarding and time off to compensation, benefits, careers, hiring, and travel.
  • Learning: Investment Time, courses, the learning library, the apprenticeship program, and internal training.
  • Delivery: how we deliver client work, from project management, development and design to our productized services, plus the eCommerce topics we reference on projects.
  • Marketing: the channels and activities we use to build awareness, and how we plan them.
  • Sales: the sales process, CRM, contracts, and pricing.
  • Partners: the partner program and the partner directory.
  • Finance: how we read the numbers, and the administrative procedures behind them.
  • Products: the products we build, such as Sprout.
  • Clients: profiles and research for specific clients.
  • Records: decisions, celebrations, retreats and plans, all dated. Keep an eye on Decisions to learn what’s happening beyond business as usual.
